Message: “A Christmas Story?” from Rev. Tom Hathaway

Rev. Wendy Miller Olapade - December 1, 2024

The Radical Nature of Blessing

This sermon invites us to reclaim the truth that we are beloved blessings, not burdens. Drawing on Mary’s story and Isaiah’s promise, it highlights how God calls us by name, not for what we achieve but for who we are. Like Mary, we are essential to God’s unfolding story of love and redemption. Through breath prayers, affirming others, and reframing challenges, we are called to live and share this radical blessing. As we prepare for Jesus’ arrival, let us embrace our belovedness, trust God’s presence, and carry love into the world.

Scripture References: Luke 1:25-38, Isaiah 43:1-15

From Series: "Words for the Beginning"

As one year ends and another begins, we reflect on the tension between endings and beginnings. Christ’s birth brought renewal into a chaotic world, while Mary, surrounded by uncertainty, trusted in a God making all things new. This season invites us to find steady ground in words of blessing – words that guide us forward. Through timeless scriptures, often heard in sacred rituals like weddings and baptisms, we’ll explore lessons of belovedness, hope, and starting anew. Whatever lies ahead, love remains our foundation and our beginning.
