Time and again in the teachings of Jesus we hear about people getting things that they DO NOT deserve:
Parties are thrown for younger brothers who squander their inheritance.
A full day’s wages are paid to laborers who put in only an hour’s work.
It’s hard not to walk away from these teachings with the sense that love of God is profoundly unfair thing.
And that’s because it is.
By our standards the love of God is a profoundly, an absurdly, a startlingly unfair thing.
But thank God for that because what that means is that that love is for us not just when we’re at our very best but also, and even more importantly, it means that that love is for us when we’re at our absolute worst.
Friends, each of us is more sinful than we will ever fully realize. But, at the same time, we are more loved that we can ever possibly imagine.
